What does it mean to be an Empath or Highly Sensitive Person?

Have you ever wondered if you are a sensitive person or what exactly it is?

Do you feel significant anxiety or strong emotions around large crowds or in social settings? Do you feel dizzy in certain environments or around certain types of people? Do you feel relaxed when by yourself, but anxious when you go out in the world? Or maybe loud noises, like yelling, cause a strong negative response in you? Do you feel almost like you have a hangover after spending time with a large group?

If any of these traits resonate, you may be an Empath or a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP).

There is nothing wrong with you. Just because you have a highly sensitive personality does not mean it is a disorder. You are not too sensitive, despite what others have made you feel. You are not broken. Highly Sensitive People and Empaths feel things deeply and can experience challenges unique to them. They have certain traits that can make life more difficult and cause more suffering if the person isn’t aware of how to best care for themselves to manage the overwhelm life can easily create for this group of people. Empaths and Highly Sensitive people can have a hard time distinguishing what is coming from them and what has been influenced by other people.

What makes life more difficult for Empaths + Highly Sensitive People?

In America 40 million adults, or about 18% of the population, suffer with anxiety; while some amount is normal, it should never be debilitating. Depression is the most common mental health challenge and affects 264 million people across the globe. Many people struggle with depression and feel very alone in their experience, which can make it all the more difficult.

Anxiety and Depression are personality traits that have a tendency to be higher for highly sensitive person’s or empaths. Due to their unique skills and gifts, only about 15-20% of the population would be considered a Highly Sensitive Person and only 2-10% are considered Empaths.

Empaths and HSP have a deeper experience of their emotions and sensations. If you are an Empath or Highly Sensitive Person, but have been previously unaware, you may be overwhelmed with anxiety or depression, but not really know why. You face unique challenges that can burn you out faster than others.

Life might be going okay for you, but you still feel heavy and bogged down. Maybe you have racing thoughts or are easily overwhelmed in social situations or when you have to perform at work or school. Maybe you struggle to engage in everyday life as a result. Whether your depression has been short-term or long-lasting, I can help you navigate the challenges it brings.

What are specific challenges Empaths + Highly Sensitive People face?

Empath’s especially can feel quite lost. As they often have a hard time discerning where they end, and others begin. They have big hearts. They can often attract Narcissistic or emotionally manipulative people in their life. Because of their personality, both Empaths and HSP feel things strongly and deeply. They can read people well, because they can sense subtle shifts in energy states. They can have a hard time explaining boundaries to their loved ones and peers, which may leave them feeling misunderstood and a bit isolated. It is important to know how to manage these sensitivities. Otherwise, they feel more like a curse, when they are really a gift.

All people will experience anxiety throughout life, because it is a normal part of the human experience. It comes from our Fear response, which has become overactive as we have evolved throughout time. However, Empaths and HSP experience a very overactive Fear Response. Their systems tend to always be in an activated state. When we are able to understand the triggers that drive anxiety, especially as Empaths, we are able to better understand how to respond to them in the present moment.

Many anxieties are based on our fears for future events or the unknown. Depression often comes as a result of being stuck in the past or plagued by aspects of our past. The past can be painful for Empaths and HSP, who feel things deeply, especially if they grew up in conflictual or negligent homes. We will explore if and how this may be true for you. Together we will explore your unique triggers and help you learn how to manage your anxiety to live a more easygoing life.

How does coaching help support empaths or HSPs?

Coaching can help you learn the tools and techniques you need to manage your experience as as an empath.

In our work together I will teach you tools and techniques to manage your anxiety and/or depression and move from an Exhausted Empath into an Empowered Empath. We will create healthy boundaries, and a self-care routine that will help you thrive, wake up feeling strong, and capable each day of being your best self and taking on the world. As a life coach for empaths and HSPs,  we will work together to help you find your whole and authentic self, while shedding the layers of conditioning you took on while growing up. There are some differences between Empaths and HSP, although they commonly overlap in people; Meaning if someone is a HSP, they are likely to also be an Empath, though certainly not always the case.

Symptoms of Anxiety and Depression are often more intense for Empaths and Highly Sensitives because they are so in tune with their bodies.

Often anxiety, especially if someone has been experiencing it long term, can cause a person to numb and shut down physically.
